Heritage Day Brings History to Life at Navigation House
Navigation House opened its doors for a special Heritage Day, welcoming visitors to step back into 1866 and discover the fascinating history of the house and the Lagan Canal.
Our recent Heritage Day at Navigation House was a fantastic success, welcoming visitors from across the local community and beyond. Built in 1866 as the residence and office for the Manager of the Lagan Canal, Navigation House offered the perfect backdrop to step back in time and celebrate the rich industrial heritage of Lisburn.
Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed an open exhibition detailing the history of Navigation House, alongside talks from Lagan Valley Regional Park and Lagan Navigation Trust, exploring the fascinating history of the canal — once a vital trade route transporting linen, coal, and goods between Lisburn and Belfast. Family-friendly activities brought the story to life, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Our trainees were at the heart of the day, proudly welcoming visitors, supporting activities, and sharing their own enthusiasm for history. It was inspiring to see them engage with the public and gain confidence while helping to showcase this unique heritage site.
We were especially honoured to welcome Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly and David Honeyford MLA. Their visit was not only a highlight of the day but also a meaningful recognition of the work we do to preserve local history and provide opportunities for people with learning disabilities.
A huge thank you goes to everyone who visited, participated, and supported Heritage Day.
We look forward to welcoming even more visitors at future events and to sharing more of the incredible stories that Navigation House and the Lagan Canal have to tell.
